Tap Dance

Tap dancing is an energetic dance style where students learn rhythm, style, technique and musicality through percussive footwork. Tap was initially popularized in Hollywood by such great dancers as Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Shirley Temple and more recently, by the hugely popular performers Tap Dogs, Stomp and Riverdance!

What People Are Saying About Our School?

  • The owner, Miranda, and all the fantastic teachers at the school have created an amazing environment. The students can do what they love, and compete on elite teams if they choose to, without it being a competitive environment with a lot of pressure, which is why I chose the school. My daughter has gone there for ten years and adores everyone there.

  • My 7-year-old recently attended a Taylor Swift inspired summer camp with PAS and she loved it! The instructors were engaging and facilitated a full day of fun activities for the kids. It can be a struggle to get my daughter excited about full-day camps, but she was keen to attend every day. I also really appreciated the performance the instructors staged for families at end of the last day.

The Magic Of Sound In A Kids Tap Dance Class

Finding an activity that actively encourages children to be loud is a rare and wonderful thing for parents. Enrolling your little one in a kids tap dance class allows them to express their natural desire to stomp and make noise in a structured, artistic setting. We focus on transforming those random stomps into crisp, intentional beats that match the rhythm of the music perfectly.

Building Complex Coordination And Balance

Learning how to articulate different parts of the foot requires an immense amount of physical focus and control. Students practice isolating their toes and heels to create distinct sounds, which rapidly improves their overall balance.

This continuous weight shifting strengthens their ankles and core muscles significantly over time. As they master these fine motor skills, you will notice them moving with much more agility and confidence in their everyday activities.

Developing A Deep Ear For Musicality

Tap dancers are essentially percussionists who use the studio floor as their primary musical instrument. Our kids tap dancing classes teach children how to listen carefully to the underlying tempo of a song and find the hidden beats within a melody.

They learn to count music accurately and understand concepts like syncopation and a capella phrasing. This deep musical awareness often inspires them to pick up other traditional instruments later in life with much greater ease.

Exploring Different Styles In Tap Dancing Classes For Kids

As your child begins their rhythmic journey, they will discover that this art form actually encompasses several distinct historical styles. Most tap dancing classes for kids introduce a blend of these variations so students can experience the full spectrum of the genre. Understanding the difference between Broadway style and Rhythm style can help you appreciate the diverse skills your child is learning each week.

Broadway tap is heavily focused on the visual aesthetic and is often seen in large musical theatre productions. It incorporates sweeping arm movements, classical jazz postures, and routines designed to look spectacular for a seated audience watching a stage.

Rhythm tap, on the other hand, prioritizes the intricate audio generated by the feet over the visual presentation of the upper body. Dancers in this style often perform closer to the ground with relaxed arms, focusing entirely on creating complex musical layers and lightning fast acoustic beats.

Core Feature Broadway Tap Rhythm Tap
Primary Focus Visual presentation and full body aesthetics Acoustic sound quality and intricate footwork
Upper Body Sweeping arm movements and theatrical poses Relaxed arms and a heavily grounded posture
Ultimate Goal Looking spectacular for a seated audience Functioning as a percussive musical instrument

Getting Ready For Tap Dance Lessons For Kids

Preparing your child for their very first rhythmic session is incredibly easy and requires minimal specialized gear. When attending tap dance lessons for kids, comfort is the absolute most important factor to consider for their clothing. We suggest breathable activewear like leggings or athletic shorts paired with a simple t-shirt so they do not overheat while jumping around.

The only mandatory requirement is a good pair of hard soled tap shoes equipped with proper metal plates on the toe and heel. For beginners, a basic Mary Jane style shoe or a simple lace up oxford provides the perfect amount of support and sound quality.

It is highly recommended to bring a water bottle to every single practice because producing continuous acoustic beats is a serious cardiovascular workout. We want to ensure your young performer stays properly hydrated and energized throughout the entire duration of their exciting musical lesson.
